Monk’s Cafe Flemish Sour Ale

This is the 4th of the 50 beers I have to work my way through, and after the previous two disappointments, I’m glad to have something actually worth trying.

The name says it all.  Ale? Yeup, true.  Sour?  Oh yeah, super true.  Flemish?  I think that’s beer-lingo for “what the frack?” so, yeah, very true.

This beer is, simply put, weird.  The sour flavor hits you up front, and in your first sip you might gag a little bit.  It’s not a taste you expect from anything.  But, after you get past that initial reaction and your taste buds acclimate, it’s really a pretty nice beer.  It has a fruity body to it, but without the sweetness that feminizes many other beers.  Imagine a lambic, but without the cough syrup.  Most beers with this strong of a flavor are hard to stomach a whole pint of, but I got through four of these without it being too much.  Definitely worth trying.
